Ibrahimi in Damascus, to Meet Al-Assad

International peace envoy tasked with ending Syria's conflict, al-Akhdar Ibrahimi, arrived Sunday in Syria and is set to meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
According to diplomats, Ibrahimi is hoping to "achieve a breakthrough", to broker a political solution based on Geneva convention.
Ibrahimi's trip is his third to Damascus since taking his post in August.
However, instead of flying directly to Syria as he has on previous visits, the envoy landed in Beirut and travelled to the Syrian capital by land. He did not speak publicly upon his arrival in Damascus.
Ibrahimi is expected to meet with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem ahead of meeting al-Assad.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the turmoil.
A recent UN report has revealed that militants from 29 countries have so far filtered into Syria to fight against the Damascus government, most of whom are extremists and al-Qaeda members.
