Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati confirmed Monday that when his government took the decision to distance itself, "it sought to protect the country and its people from the Syrian conflict as well as from all what is beyond our abilities to afford."
In an interview with "al-Joumhoria" Lebanese daily, Mikati stressed "all Lebanese sides endorsed this position in Baabda declaration."
"We, the Lebanese, must keep ourselves from interfering in the Syrian events not to pay heavy prices, from the lives of our people, children and citizens, that are far beyond our capabilities," he said.
The PM further noted that "the government is making all the necessary contacts to learn about the fate of Lebanese men killed in Syria and return them to their families and homeland."
In parallel, Mikati deplored and condemned "the disgusting scenes which was aired and that lacks the minimum level of humanitarian norms and respect of rights."
He also reiterated that he will follow this matter and will spare no effort to uncover the fate of those Lebanese citizens.
