Mursi’s Decree Unchanged, Opposition To Protest
Local Editor
Egypt president spokesperson Yasser Ali stated Monday night that the President Mohammad Mursi's decree will not be amended.
This comes as protests are to be held Tuesday in Tahrir Square, Cairo opposing this statement.
The spokesperson's statement came after Mursi met judges who bid the decree's modification issued by Mursi on Thursday. The decree stipulates that the president enjoys judicial immunity from legal challenge, and the Constituent Assembly, in charge of drafting a new constitution, is protected from dissolution.
The meet was unfruitful as Mursi declared his assertion that the decree will not be modified, stressing the temporary nature of this decree until the constitution was drafted.
On a similar note, protests opposing this statement will be held on Tuesday in Tahrir Square and Giza, demanding the total revocation of this decree. Also, some Egyptian courts declared partial strikes to protest this declaration.
Moreover, sit-ins in Tahrir Square were held since Friday after Mursi's declaration.
Furthermore, Mursi's supporters decided to postpone its mass protest initially scheduled for Tuesday in Cairo "to prevent violence", an official from the ruling Freedom and Justice Party stated.
