Iranians from all walks of life have begun nationwide rallies to mark the 33rd anniversary of the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran, dubbed the "den of espionage".

Iran Marks 33rd Anniversary of US Embassy Takeover In the capital Tehran, people began taking to the streets since early hours of Friday morning to take part in the mass rallies commemorating the historic occasion, known in Iran as "13th of Aban," and the "Student Day".

The demonstrators also condemned the US-led western sanctions against Iran, and stressed that "the United States is the main enemy of the Iran."
Since the 1979 takeover of the US embassy in Tehran, Iranians have been celebrating the occasion every year by holding rallies on the anniversary and marking it as the National Day against the "Global Arrogance".

On November 4, 1979, a group of revolutionary Iranian university students took over the US Embassy which they believed had turned into a den of espionage which aimed to overthrow the nascent Islamic Republic establishment.
Documents found at the compound later revealed that the "US was using its Tehran embassy to plot to overthrow the new Islamic establishment of Iran."

Later, the Founder of the Islamic Republic His Eminence late Imam Sayyed Rouhollah Khomeini hailed the effort as "a second revolution with a greater significance."
