Romney: To Arm, Organize Syrian Rebels, Strengthen Ties with “Israel”

US Republican Candidate Mitt Romney declared on Monday the US must join other nations in arming Syrian rebels to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime.
He further casted President Barack Obama's efforts as weak, and part of a broader lack of leadership in the Middle East and around the globe.
Hoping to bolster his own foreign policy credentials, the Republican presidential challenger said he "would identify and organize those in the Syrian opposition who share American values, then work with American allies to ensure they obtain the arms they need to defeat al-Assad's tanks, helicopters and fighter jets."
"It is essential that we develop influence with those forces in Syria that will one day lead a country that sits at the heart of the Middle East," he added.
Romney claimed that "the civil war there is a proxy conflict with Iran," and said "it's in America's interest to court an opposition likely to play a key role in leading a future Syria."
In a wide-ranging address at the Virginia Military Institute, he criticized Obama's policies toward Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and "Israel".
In parallel, he pledged "to use America's great power to shape history."
This message was greatly applauded by "Israeli" officials who interpreted it as getting tough with Iran.
Romney's message to "Israel" was that the US under his leadership would stand shoulder-to-shoulder with its Zionist ally.
"The relationship between the president of the United States and the prime minister of "Israel", our closest ally in the region, has suffered great strains," said Romney. "The president explicitly stated that his goal was to put daylight between the United States and "Israel". And he has succeeded. This is a dangerous situation that has set back the hope of peace in the Middle East and emboldened our mutual adversaries, especially Iran."
This comes despite Obama's continuous reaffirmation on the historic ties with "Israel", his policy of unswerving commitment to "Israel's" security, threats to use the US veto against the Palestinians at the United Nations and the pump of billions of dollars in military aid to the Zionist entity.
In his speech, Romney pledged to "put the leaders of Iran on notice that the United States and our friends and allies will prevent them from acquiring nuclear weapons capability". Obama has repeatedly done the same.
The US candidate went on: "I will not hesitate to impose new sanctions on Iran and will tighten the sanctions we currently have. I will restore the permanent presence of aircraft carrier task forces in both the eastern Mediterranean and the Gulf region - and work with "Israel" to increase our military assistance and coordination. For the sake of peace, we must make clear to Iran through actions - not just words - that their nuclear pursuit will not be tolerated."
