Nearly 17 million of US citizens across the US suffered from "very low food security" in 2011, the US Department of Agriculture revealed.
In a report issued by Reuters on Wednesday, the report said that the number of poor Americans who repeatedly ran short of food increased by 800,000 in 2011.

The report added that women living alone and African-American households suffered the biggest increase in very low food security.
A record number of 46.7 million people were enrolled for food stamps in June, showing a 173,000-increase compared with May, said the US government on Tuesday.
The food crisis in the US is one of the controversial issues during the presidential election campaign.
Republicans are calling for large cuts in food stamps and Medicaid to help reduce the deficit, but Democrats say the cuts are too deep.
