Source: Al-Manar TV, 29-1-2008
Hizbullah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah received Lebanese Army commander General Michel Suleiman accompanied by military intelligence chief Brigadier General George Khouri. Suleiman offered his condolences for the martyrdom of six people during Sunday's incident in Mar Mekhayel area in Dahiyeh (Beirut's southern suburb). The army commander also stressed the military has launched a "serious and comprehensive" investigation into Sunday's incident adding that the probe will be clear, transparent and precise in determining responsibilities. Suleiman also stressed during a previous meeting with House Speaker Nabih Berri that he "did not and will not cover up for any culprit no matter where he was."
For his part, Sayyed Nasrallah stressed the need to launch a "swift, serious and complete investigation away from pressures and politicizing" the issue.
WE WILL FOLLOW UP CRIME UNTIL VERY END: BERRI
Meanwhile, Berri told Assafir Daily that targeting unarmed civilians is a dangerous matter that should not be overlooked. "The blood that was spilled in Mar Mekhayel is precious blood. We will follow up this matter until the very end."
IS BLOODSHED MESSAGE TO OPPOSITION?
Hezbollah MP Hussein Hajj Hasan demanded General Suleiman gives a clear position as to the Mar Mekhayel crime. Speaking to Al-Manar channel, Hajj Hasan questioned whether the bloodshed was a message to Hizbullah, Amal or the opposition as a whole.
"General Suleiman should answer this question through a swift and serious investigation," the MP said.
GEAGEA'S VERY DEEP ANALYSIS; LF MEMBER ARRESTED
Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea on Monday accused the opposition of seeking to "paralyze the army after they placed the presidency in vacuum and paralyzed the government."
He said the army should not be held responsible for what happened because its assignment is not to stand idly by and watch. In answering a question regarding charges that LF partisans opened fire at the protestors from sniping nests, Geagea said: "Had their been snipers from the Lebanese Forces the Army would have arrested them." News reports said Tuesday that a Lebanese Forces member was arrested for having a hand in Sunday's sniping. According to the NBN TV the man is a Lebanese Forces member who works in the customs. Al-Manar could not verify this report from an independent source.
FUNERALS HELD FOR MARTYRS
Meanwhile funerals were being held for the martyrs.
Amid chants "Saniora is the enemy of Allah," and "death to Saniora" angry Chiyah residents buried two of their fellow citizens who were killed by sniper shots. Ahmed Hamza and Ahmed Ajouz were put in their final resting places in the Shahidein grave yard in south Beirut. Amal Movement politburo member Jamil Hayek accused the February 14 bloc, without mentioning it by name, of seeking to use the army against the opposition. "You want to use the army as a stick ... to continue with your dominance," Hayek said in his speech eulogizing the two victims. "You know that security in Lebanon is a political issue that you keep blocking by usurping powers," Hayek added. He called for a "swift, but not hasty, investigation by security administrations". Other funerals were held in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa region for other martyrs, including a Hezbollah coordination official and a civil defense aid worker, who also fell on this black Sunday.
