Once again, Russia and China stood firm with the Syrian regime, against a UN Security Council resolution, that threatened the Syrian authorities with more strict sanctions.
Russia, China Veto New UNSC Resolution on Syria
For the third time in a row, Russia and China on Thursday used their veto power to stop resolutions that aim at pressuring the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, therefore causing anger among Western states, Reuters reported.
On this level, Britain's Ambassador to the UN, Mark Layll Grant, claimed that "The effect of their [Russia and China] actions is to protect a brutal regime. They have chosen to put their national interests ahead of the lives of millions of Syrians."
For her part, the US Ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice dubbed the Russian and Chinese action "dangerous and deplorable".

On another hand, Russia's US Ambassador, Vitaly Churkin, told that council, "We simply cannot accept a document [...] that would open the path for the pressure of sanctions and further external military involvement in Syrian domestic affairs."
Commenting on the Western-backed sought resolution, China's UN Ambassador Li Baodong said that the Western countries were "arrogant and rigid" in negotiations on the resolution.

He believed that the resolution text "would not only further aggravate the turmoil, but also result in spillover to other countries in the region."
Russia and China have strictly condemned, and vowed to halt any UNSC resolution that seeks military or strict intervention in the Syrian crisis, stressing internal dialogue is the only solution.
