The UN Security Council (UNSC) members convened on Monday for the launch of the information debate over the Palestinian proposal for full statehood at the UN.

According to the UN rules, news member states can only be admitted when receiving the UNSC recommendation. If the UNSC recommends acceptance, then the General Assembly would vote favoring or not the ratification of the decision.
As long as the five permanent members have not reached a mutual decision regarding the Palestinian bid, the debates are not expected to reach a formal vote anytime soon, according to UN sources.

According to "Israeli" daily Haaretz, Deputy Head of a Western mission to the UN states, "It's highly likely that the consultation will continue for some weeks".
"The Palestinian application is considered an extremely sensitive issue, and in particular, it's a source of controversy between the council's two leading powers, the US and Russia. Therefore, no quick decision that would produce an official debate and vote is expected", the Western diplomat added.

Russia has been calling for the approval of an independent Palestinian state, while the US has vowed to Veto a decision favoring an international recognition.
