Shami: To Internationally Pressure “Israel” to Compensate Cluster Munitions Victims

Lebanese Foreign Minister of Caretaker government Ali Shami stressed the importance of the Convention on Cluster Munitions 2nd Meeting of States Parties which will be held in Beirut between the 12th and 16th of September 2011, with all its legal, political, and international dimensions.
He noted that right after the government resignation, it was suggested to hold the convention in another country, but he insisted it should be held in Beirut as that would be a clear acknowledgement to the constructive role Lebanon plays being a victim of cluster munitions.
Shami noted that the International Convention aims at exerting pressure on "Israel" in order to bear its international responsibilities -whether moral or financial- concerning the cluster munitions victims, where 400 victims fell in Lebanon since 2006.
The Minister explained that Lebanon is one of the major victims of cluster munitions that were dispersed by "Israel" during its aggressions on Lebanon, all in violation of international and humanitarian laws. He further elaborated that the number of cluster bombs "Israel" dispersed in Lebanese territories only during the2006 July aggression reached 4 million, over an area of 54 square kilometers.
