Yemenis Protest Immunity Deal with Saleh, Call for His Trial

Thousands of Yemeni people called for the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh to be trialed, denouncing the immunity deal planned by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

The GCC said that President Saleh would be granted immunity from prosecution if he steps down from his 32-year old position within 30 days, and hands over the power to his deputy.

As part of the revolutions sweeping the region, the Yemeni people joined the anti-regime uprising demanding political, social, and economic changes. After intensive pressure from neighboring countries, the Yemeni president then agreed to the aforementioned initiative in granting him immunity from prosecution.

The Yemeni people however, The Yemeni people however, rejected this proposal, and called for the ouster of Ali Abdullah Saleh and his prosecution. Protesters also demanded that President Saleh should be held accountable concerning with the violent practices on protesters.

On the other hand, the Yemeni opposition agreed to the deal, believing this could pave the way for forming a unity government within a week after Saleh steps down.
