Hours after "Israeli" Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz slammed the political leadership's conduct in the Second Lebanon war, "Israeli" Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's associates hit back. "Mofaz is attempting to shirk responsibility for his failures as defense (war) minister and chief of staff," Olmert's associates told "Israeli" daily Ynet Saturday evening.
"Mofaz is the person responsible for the decline in training sessions, reduced stockpiles, and the army's mediocre performance during the Second Lebanon War," Olmert's close associates said. "The army has been occupied for a year now with fixing the flaws that Mofaz is responsible for as defense (war) minister and chief of staff. Mofaz's attempt to shirk responsibility ahead of the Winograd Report's publication is outrageous."
Senior officials in Kadima who are closely associated with the "Israeli" prime minister said that "the Winograd Committee wrote to the High Court of Justice that the reason it will not be making personnel recommendations stems from the responsibility of those who managed affairs in the years leading up to the war." "The committee wrote that the failures of those officials are at times greater than those of the officials who managed the war," the Kadima members said.
Earlier Saturday, Mofaz claimed that "the Second Lebanon War would have ended differently if "the defense (war) establishment would have called up reserve forces and used them as it should have, just like in operation Defensive Shield." Moreover, Mofaz charged that Hizbullah today is stronger than what it was before the war, and added that Security Council Resolution 1701 that ended the war "is not worth the paper it's written on."
