Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt said on Thursday evening that media leaks from the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) give the impression that the tribunal is being used for political goals.

In a televised interview, Jumblatt said that Western countries seemingly want to use the STL to settle accounts with Hizbullah and Iran after the "Israeli" loss in the 2006 July War.

Jumblatt assured that "The indictment threatens Lebanon and its stability with strife that no one might survive," adding "Confronting "Israel" in war is much easier than (dealing with) strife." Moreover, he added "Those who fabricated Resolution 1559 are the same who killed (PM) Rafik Hariri and executed all the other assassinations."

Answering a question on whether he will vote against the tribunal in case this issue will be discussed in the coming parliamentary session, Jumblatt voiced his readiness to do anything to prevent sectarian conflict.

Jumblatt also voiced hope that no vote is cast regarding the transfer of the "false witnesses" issues to the Justice Council.

on a related note, Jumblatt expressed optimism towards a settlement that might be reached owing to the Syrian-Saudi efforts, noting there is continuous communication between the Syrian President Bashar Al Assad and the Saudi King Abdallah Bin Abdel Aziz.
