In an interview with Al Akhbar newspaper, Ministerial sources confirmed that the false witnesses' issue will be discussed in the first Ministerial Council meeting which will be held in Baabda Palace after President Michel Suleiman returns from his visit to America.

According to the same sources, new updates have come up regarding this issue on the judiciary level, where they refer that the issue could be resolved, yet there would be political and legal obstacles which would hard to overcome.

As for Minister of Justice Ibrahim Najjar's report on this issue, sources reveal that it revolves around three major points which would represent demands of former opposition for the Lebanese judiciary to start pursuing false witnesses.

The first major point in the report indicates that the Legislation and the Consultation committee's opinion in the Justice Ministry, confirms that the Lebanese Judiciary is an expert in pursuing false witnesses.

The report stresses that especially the false witnesses involved, either misled the Lebanese judiciary directly through presenting false testimonies during investigations, or indirectly through giving out false testimonies to the International Commission of Inquiry.

The daily added that the second major point in Najjar's report is that General Prosecutor Daniel Bellemare confirmed that he was not concerned with the false witnesses who presented their false testimonies before the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) became in charge of investigations.

As for the third point, it states that the Lebanese Judiciary still possesses a copy of the investigations of PM Raiq Hariri's assassination, before handing the issue in to the STL in March 2009, where the STL asked the Lebanese Judiciary to stay way of the issue.

In this context, opposition members considered in an interview with Al Akhbar newspaper, that investigating the false witnesses will not be complete unless two conditions were achieved.

The first condition is handing in the false witnesses' files, which are now in the possession of the STL, to Officer Jamil Al Sayyed, and to the Lebanese Judiciary.

The second condition is related to loosening the pressure on the security-judicial formula, which was resulted by the 14th of March coalition during the past five years, for any step in the false witnesses' file will not occur without any political decision to lift the tension off this security-judicial formula.
