As-Safir: Legislation Committee Says Lebanese Judiciary Has Authority to Prosecute False Witnesses

Justice Minister Ibrahim Najjar, who was tasked on the 19th of August by the Lebanese Prime Minister to follow-up on the issue of false witnesses in former PM Rafiq Hariri's assassination case, has enough information that "falls in the service of attempts to prosecute them, a source told As-Safir Lebanese daily.
Najjar had sent letters to the Public Prosecutor Saeed Mirza, Special Tribunal for Lebanon Prosecutor Daniel Bellemare, and the Legislation authority to question it in the authorities of the Lebanese judiciary to study the file of the false witnesses.
Informed sources told As-Safir that Bellemare has not yet responded to Najjar's letter.
On the other hand, the source said that the legislation authority confirmed that the Lebanese judiciary has the authority to prosecute false witnesses
Ministerial sources expected the next cabinet to witness intense statements on the issue.
On the same note, Brigadier General Jamil As-Sayed will be holding a press conference Sunday morning, which will contain stances related to the false witnesses file, the indictment, and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon.
According to the newspaper, As-Sayed will reveal the latest developments in the case he filed in France against Former Ambassador Johnny Abdo and Former UN investigator Detlev Mehlis, as well as in Syria against false witnesses and 33 Lebanese figures he accuses of taking part in fabricating and taking care of these false witnesses.
As-Sayed will also discuss the awaited decision in the upcoming few days on whether he will be delivered the evidence related to the false witnesses. As-Sayed had asked for the evidence in a previous hearing at the Hague.
