Security Source to As-Safir: Karam in Contact with “Israelis” While Candidate in 2009 Elections
On Saturday As-Safir newspaper quoted an anonymous source connected to the investigation of retired Brigadier General Fayez Karam as saying that Karam had been in close contact with the "Israelis" while a candidate in the 2009 parliamentary elections.
Karam, who is a Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) official, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of collaborating with "Israel".
The Source determined Karam's route after departure from Lebanon when working with the "Israelis" since the end of the eighties, noting that the Syrian forces arrested Karam and transferred him to Syria, where he spent 9 months in prison, then released and sent back to Lebanon.
He spent a short time in Lebanon, then moved to then occupied Jezzine, where "Israelis" transferred him to Haifa, where he stayed for a few days and then "Israelis" transferred him to Cyprus where he travelled using a forged passport to Paris, where he spent a few years before returning back to Lebanon with Gen. Michel Aoun in 2005.
The source did not describe the evidence, and added that investigators were carefully monitoring Karam's health since he had undergone open heart surgery not too long ago.
The source also said that Karam initially denied collaborating but confessed "within fifty minutes" after being confronted with evidence. It also added that the investigation was not politicized and that the evidence speaks for itself.
Furthermore, the source said attention was attracted to Karam six months ago when a monitoring operation uncovered suspicious behavior, but authorities had waited to arrest him until they were satisfied with the evidence.
