UN Calls Upon Respecting UNIFIL Free Movement, Stresses on 1701 Implementation

In the light of recent talks and events, the UN Security Council assured its support for the peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, calling upon all parties to allow UNIFIL the free movement.

This Friday meeting was agreed upon by the French mission to Lebanon and the Lebanese envoy to the UN, where all 15 members of the Security Council approved on the published statement.

The statement included, "Council members strongly deplore the recent incidents involving UNIFIL peacekeepers, which took place in southern Lebanon on June 29, July 3 and July 4".

"The members of the Security Council also call on all parties to abide scrupulously by their obligation to respect the safety of UNIFIL and other UN personnel", the statement further read.

By the end of its discussions, the UNSC affirmed on the freedom of movement of the peacekeeping troops, and stressed on the importance of implementation of resolution 1701, which was a result of July 2006 "Israeli" attack on Lebanon.
