Assad: We Agreed with Lebanon on Maritime Demarcation to Know Each Countrys Right of Resources
Syrian President Bashar Assad praised his country's firmness, saying it is due to its ability to invest the political flow controlling the region.
Lebanese As-Safir newspaper quoted Assad assuring that his country agreed with Lebanon on maritime demarcation, to have a clear vision on each country's right of the resources.
On the issue of off-shore gas fields' detection in the Mediterranean, Assad said preliminary studies reveal these exist in the Syrian regional waters' borders adding, "When these studies are complete, we will consider proposing the issue to companies".
During his visit to Latin America, a tour that included Venezuela, Cuba, Brazil, and Argentina, Assad considered that during the last ten years of his rule, Syria proved its basic role in the region.
Syrian president said his visit aims at developing ideas for future relations with these "emerging" countries that have an independent political decision, and stands in support with Arab causes.
Assad emphasized on Turkey's role in the region saying, "Syria wants to mobilize support for the Turkish role."
On the other hand, regarding Syria's relation with Washington, Assad said, "The American administration has taken some steps towards Syria, including the approval of appointing an Ambassador in Damascus, the agreement on Syria's joining of the World Trade Organization, and the providing of individual licenses for the exportation of planes' spare parts. It seems that there is an intension to improve these relations, but can we transform these intensions to real action? We have to wait to see. "
As for the peace process, Assad ruled out the possibility of reaching peace in the near future, saying, "For Syria, there is no difference between an "Israeli" official or another. Syria has an occupied land and peace obligations and unless these obligations are met, Syria won't sign any peace agreement."
"Peace means normal relations between the two sides," he added, stressing that "signing a peace agreement doesn't mean that peace will be achieved, it is more like "a permanent ceasefire agreement," reiterating Syria's insistence to restore the whole land of occupied Golan.
Concerning the "Israeli" siege over Gaza, Assad assured, "Syria supports every step done for lifting the siege, the Syrian people contribute to all the flotillas heading to the strip, and the government fully supports them".
He emphasized on Syria's political actions in supporting its causes, saying that his country does not wait for international support, it rather follows the path alone if no one wanted to support it.
