At a hearing before the Congressional Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia on the 21st of April 2010, Jeffrey Feltman, US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs and former US ambassador to Lebanon, faced some tough questioning and was for once on the back foot.

Congress focused its attack on Washington's decision to send Robert Ford as ambassador to Damascus, especially as his assignment comes amid the uproar on allegations that Syria is supplying Hizbullah with Scud missiles.

With avalanches of criticism showering Feltman and the US policy and approach on Syria and the Middle East, Feltman could not defend the US strategy, and mostly had no answers or justifications to all the criticism.

But sure he was able to defend "Israel" and the US loyalty to its ally in the region as soon as U.S. Representative Eliot L. Engel referred back to a quote Feltman had said in his opening statement.

Engel cited a quote in Feltman's opening statement saying: "engagement with Syria will not come at the expense of our friends in the region, such as Lebanon and Iraq", and asks Feltman if "friends" also include "Israel".

As expected, Feltman is as loyal to "Israel" as his government is to its "number 1" ally in the Middle East.

Feltman's reply was an absolute and unequivocal assurance that the US desire is to get to comprehensive peace in the Middle East region as it stems from U.S. commitment to "Israel's" security.

As for the "plausible" source of information the US relies on, it is the Mossad as representative Dan Burton assures, stressing he has great confidence in the Mossad which provided information that the Scud missiles were being transported through Syria.

Meanwhile, Feltman was unable to answer with certainty that the allegations on Scud missiles were true and was unable to give a decisive answer as he awaits "American Sources to provide evidence of the claim".
