April 17th is Palestinian Prisoners Day, a date to remind the public that thousands of Palestinian prisoners are imprisoned in "Israeli" jails under extreme difficult circumstances, where they are exposed to various forms of torture and inhumane treatment.

This day comes as widespread "Israeli" practice of detaining Palestinians is increasing day by day, despite the atmosphere of quietness that is prevailing in the region.

Thousands of Palestinians have held a demonstration in Gaza City as well as the West Bank, demanding the release of Palestinian prisoners from "Israeli" prisons.

The demonstrators who took to the streets of Gaza City, Khan Yunis and the West Bank, staged a mock-trial for "Israeli" Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Wednesday.

The rallies were organized ahead of Prisoners Day on Saturday.

On this occasion, the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) released a report, according to which over 7,000 Palestinian are in "Israeli" jails.

Among the detainees, there are 34 female prisoners and 270 child detainees of whom 44 are under the age of 16 years.

Three of the prisoners have been in jail for more than three decades, and 315 for more than 15 years, said the Thursday statement.

According to the bureau, "Israel" has arrested more than 760,000 Palestinians since the occupation of the Palestinian territories in 1967, including 70,000 arrests made following the Al Aqsa Intifada in 2000.

The data also indicates that more than 19,000 Palestinian have been detained under administrative terms - detention without trial - over the past eight years, 264 of whom are currently held in "Israeli" prisons.

Meanwhile, 1,000 people are still awaiting trial.

Since 1967, at least 200 Palestinian prisoners have been killed in "Israeli" detention and interrogation centers. These prisoners are subjected to inhuman treatment such as torture, deprivation of medical treatment, years-long isolated confinement and deliberate killing.
