President of the United States sets a date to withdraw from Iraq after 7 years of occupation, amid skepticism he will keep his promise.

US President Barack Obama said in his first State of the Union address Wednesday night that all US troops in Iraq would return home by the end of August.

He added that the US would support the Iraqi government as it holds elections, which are scheduled for February. According to Obama, his country would continue to partner with Iraq's people to promote regional peace and prosperity.

However, the president said the US is increasing troops in Afghanistan to train the Afghan Security Forces so they can begin to take the lead in July 2011.

More and more civilians fall victim of the US-led war on Iraq, since US forces invaded the country in 2003 after toppling the Iraqi regime and occupying the country.

Earlier, Obama gave a promise to shut down the controversial detention center of Guantanamo, as he set a deadline at the beginning of 2010 to closing the base but failed to keep it.
