Japanese authorities had called on almost 250,000 people to leave homes for evacuation centers amid fears of further quakes, media reported Monday, citing an aid agency representative.

The reports came just days after Japanese Kumamoto prefecture on the Kyushu island was hit by a 6.5-magnitude earthquake on Thursday, followed by a 7.3 quake on Saturday. At least 37 people died and over 1,000 others were injured as result of the quakes.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the number of evacuees in Kumamoto Prefecture reached 104,900 people on Monday. The agency warned that more tremors were likely to occur in the coming days.
