Turkey Denies Statement that Deal has been Reached to Let US Use its Airbases

Turkey has not reached a new agreement to let the US use its Incirlik airbase in the fight against so-called "Daesh" [ISIL] militants, and talks are continuing on the subject, sources at the Turkish prime minister’s office said, in comments that run contrary to a statement made by US national security adviser Susan Rice on Sunday.

Turkey had reached an agreement with Washington on the training of so-called "moderate" Syrian militants, the sources told reporters, but it was not yet clear "where [and] in what way" that would happen.

Meanwhile, Turkey has not made a decision on whether to open its Incirlik airbase in the country’s south coalition forces in the fight against the militant group, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has also said. Cavusoglu said in New York on Monday that talks on Incirlik were continuing.

On Sunday, the US said Turkey had agreed to let US and coalition forces use its military bases, including the key Incirlik airbase close to the southern city of Adana, 100 miles from the Syrian border.
