Ecuador Rejects US-Led Strikes in Syria

Ecuador on Wednesday rejected as a violation of Syrian sovereignty the air strikes the United States and Arab allies have carried out against the so-called "Daesh" [ISIL] extremist group.

Ecuador’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement: "The actions they carried out go against international rights, for they have not been recognized by the UN General Assembly nor authorized by the Security Council."

Damascus’ lack of consent makes the offensive a "violation of the state of Syria’s sovereignty and a threat to its territorial integrity," it added.

"It is imperative that any military action get proper approval from the international community. Recent history teaches us that measures that are unilateral, as well as unlawful, exacerbate instability in those territories," the Ecuadoran government said.

On Tuesday, the United States and a coalition of Arab allies launched a series of airstrikes against Daesh in Syria, expanding a campaign that Washington has been waging in Iraq since August 8.
