Syrian army troops killed at least 70 so-called "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" [ISIL] militants in 48 hours in Syria’s northern province of Raqa, a monitoring group said on Friday.

The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said ISIL had launched a major push on Tabqa military airport late Tuesday, which has been largely overrun by the "jihadists."

The militants had carried out car bomb attacks in their assault but failed to make any breakthrough, the UK-based group said.

"At least 70 ISIL fighters have been lost since early Wednesday in regime air raids, Scud missile blasts and mine explosions," Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.
