UN Rights Chief Criticizes Security Council Over Global Conflicts

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, sharply criticized the UN Security Council for placing "geopolitical considerations" above the "collective interest," saying that greater responsibility by the body would have saved hundreds of thousands of lives around the globe, in her last address on Thursday.

In her final address to the security council, Pillay sharply criticized the 15-member body for its ineffectiveness on Syria and other conflicts.
"Short-term geopolitical considerations and national interest, narrowly defined, have repeatedly taken precedence over intolerable human suffering and grave breaches of and long-term threats to international peace and security," she said.

"These crises hammer home the full cost of the international community’s failure to prevent conflict," Pillay said, adding that, "Greater responsiveness would have saved hundreds of thousands of lives."

"None of these crises erupted without warning," she said.

Pillay also cited conflicts in seized Gaza, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Ukraine, the Central African Republic, Congo, Libya, Mali, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan.
