Pakistani opposition leader Imran Khan has warned that massive anti-government protests will continue until Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif steps down from his position.

In an address to a protest event in the capital city of Islamabad on Saturday, Khan said he would stage a sit-in later in the afternoon that would go on until Sharif leaves office.

"I’ll sit here and Nawaz Sharif, you decide. You have just one option - resign and hold re-elections," he said.

The head of the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) party says the Sharif administration has failed to investigate alleged election irregularities. The PTI has called for new polls.

Meanwhile, Rana Sanaullah, a senior leader of Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) party, expressed the government’s readiness to investigate allegations of electoral fraud.
