Sayyed Nasrallah: We condemn any attack against army

"Problem in North can be solved politically in a way that protects Lebanese army, Palestinian brothers"

"Peace be upon you and best wishes on the occasion of the seventh Resistance and Liberation Day. As I make my live address through Al-Manar TV station, I thank Almighty Allah for His blessings. Praised be Allah for rendering us victorious and granting us success to continue on this path. Brothers and sisters, I feel proud on this Resistance and Liberation Day, however, we are not joyful given the recent events in Lebanon. On this day, I salute the martyrs on top of which is martyr Sayyed Abbas Moussawi and his family, martyr Sheikh Ragheb Harb and all the martyrs in Lebanon not forgetting the martyrs of the Lebanese army and security forces, the martyrs of the resistance in occupied Palestine, and the martyrs of the Arab Syrian army. I also salute the wounded and their families and the detainees in "Israeli" jails as well as resistance fighters and their families."

With these words Hizbullah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah began his live address on Al-Manar TV station Thursday night. His eminence tackled three topics: The reality and characteristics of the resistance, Hizbullah and politics in Lebanon and the recent incident in north Lebanon.

Reality and Characteristics of the Resistance

On the first topic Sayyed Nasrallah said that the Islamic Resistance spearheaded the resistance movement in Lebanon after the National Resistance. "One of the major characteristics of the resistance is its Islamic, ethical and national commitment. Our military operations targeted "Israeli" occupation forces but it had never occurred that it targeted innocent civilians. When a bomb was planted and civilians were in the target area, the operation was postponed. The resistance also gave great heed to the lives of the families of the collaborators and everyone knows that the operation to take down collaborator Akel Hashem was postponed for months because his family was in the circle of danger. When he got killed, he was killed alone," Sayyed Nasrallah said.
However, he added, this is not the conduct of the US and "Israel" in Iraq, Afghanistan and occupied Palestine.

"We don`t have the hobby of spilling blood. When the collaborators gathered at the Fatima Gate on the day of liberation, they were within the resistance`s shooting range, but we gave them a chance to return, meditate and repent. This civilized and balanced resistance cannot be defeated," his eminence said.
The Hizbullah chief reminded that during the victory rally in Bint Jbeil in the year 2000, he dedicated the victory to the Palestinian people who after a few months, kicked off the second Intifada.

"I did not ask for a reward because this was our duty," Sayyed Nasrallah said.

Hizbullah and politics

The secretary general explained that Hizbullah had been monitoring what was taking place on the internal front, however, he added that the party`s main focus was to be prepared for a day that eventually came, "because we knew that the Zionists will not let their defeat pass quietly."

"We`ve engaged in politics on the 14th of February 2005; the day that saw this small country hit by a massive earthquake, that is the assassination of former Prime Minister martyr Rafik Hariri. This is when we sensed that Lebanon had entered a dark tunnel and that it was our duty to engage in politics. But soon we discovered that fighting "Israel" is much cleaner and more honest that engaging in politics in Lebanon. Our priority was to prevent Lebanon from slipping into sedition and avoid an inter-Lebanese conflict, whether a Muslim-Christian conflict, sectarian or even a Lebanese-Palestinian conflict. We also had to avoid any Lebanese-Syrian conflict." Sayyed Nasrallah explained that if it were not to the March 8 rally, Lebanon would have undoubtedly headed to a showdown with Syria, which the so called February 14 political group still insists it is behind Hariri`s assassination, with no evidence in hand. His eminence said Hizbullah engagement in politics was based on dialogue and openness.

"We were even ready to sit at a round table and discuss the arms of the resistance, which we consider sacred. But the target has always been the resistance in every aspect, even its name "resistance." Today is supposed to be The Resistance and Liberation day, not according to us but according to the ministerial statement, however the word "resistance" has been removed. We did not engage in politics to be given this or that ministry. Nevertheless, what we discovered is that the other side did not want to discuss the tribunal of international character. Instead they smuggled it to the Security Council and unfortunately made a terrible mistake when they demanded the tribunal be ratified under chapter seven of the UN charter. We also discovered that the other party does not want us as partners in this country and that they only wanted us to be a décor in the government. The only crime that we committed after the war was demanding a national unity government. They refused a national unity government and they refused to let the people decide and they also refused to hold early parliamentary elections. This is why we decided to quit this government along with our brothers from the Amal Movement.

No one can rule Lebanon alone, no one can impose his will on Lebanon and no one can delete the other from the political map of this country. However, the other group still insists on it behavior and performance; bringing us to the incidents in north Lebanon.
Recent incidents in north Lebanon
Sayyed Nasrallah said that what is taking place north of Lebanon is not isolated from the general atmosphere and political wrangling, not to forget security perils Lebanon is facing at this stage.

Hizbullah`s leader has cautioned the Lebanese government against storming the Nahr el-Bared refugee camp in northern Lebanon where fighters are holding out against Lebanese troops.

He also criticized US weapons aid to the Lebanese army, saying that Lebanon risked getting dragged into America`s war against al-Qaeda.
Nasrallah said: "The problem in the north can be solved politically and through the judiciary in a way that protects the Lebanese army, our Palestinian brothers, the state and peace and stability without transforming Lebanon into a battleground in which we fight al-Qaeda on behalf of the Americans."
He said accepting US help would draw more fighters into the country and potentially destabilise it.

Nasrallah said the Fatah Islam fighters who attacked the military should be brought to justice.

But he said Hizbullah opposed any military incursion into the camp to crush the fighters.
He said: "The Nahr el-Bared camp and Palestinian civilians are a red line. We will not accept or provide cover or be partners in this."
Hizbullah and its supporters accuse Fouad Siniora, the Lebanese prime minister, of being a puppet of the US and are pushing for his removal.

"The Nahr al-Bared question is a very delicate, complicated and dangerous one. It is interrelated with the questions of Lebanon, Palestine, the region, the American, the camps, the settlement of the Palestinians and the war on terror," he added.
His eminence warned that Lebanon is today facing a real problem and that everyone is looking how to salvage this country.

"The Lebanese army is the guardian of security, stability and national unity in this country. We should all regard this army as the only institution left capable of preserving security and stability in this country, with all due respect to other security services. We condemn any attack against the Lebanese army or the Lebanese security services, regardless of the attackers. This is a red line that should be observed and passing it should not be tolerated. On the other hand, those who attacked the army should be brought to justice and have a fair trial. Storming into the Nahr al-Bared camp is a dangerous approach. It brings back some painful memories from the past (the war of refugee camps) A government should act as a government, that is to arrest people and bring them to justice, but not to launch a Bush-style war on terror and kill people on the streets."

Sayyed Nasrallah said that "we should be aware of the American hand in the incident in northern Lebanon."There should be an investigation over the cause of the incident, how did it start and who to the decision. The Americans have built an air bridge to send military supplies to the Lebanese Army upon Saniora`s request. This is dangerous. They say that during the war, the government had asked Washington to interfere to stop the war, however, the United States refused. Instead it asked the "Israelis" to proceed. Where were the arms when Lebanese army soldiers were killed when "Israel" was bombing their positions and vehicles?

This vigilant care for the Lebanese army today should be questioned by the Lebanese, the Palestinians, the Arabs and everyone."
He said: "Does USA concern us that we start a conflict with al-Qaeda in Lebanon and consequently attract members and fighters of al-Qaeda from all over the world to Lebanon to conduct their battle with the Lebanese army and the rest of the Lebanese?"
