Bahrain Crackdown: Ayatollah Qassim Back under House Arrest Following Surgery
Local Editor
Bahrain's highest religious authority Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Qassim was discharged from hospital over the weekend after undergoing surgery but was returned to his home in Diraz where he remains under house arrest.
Sheikh Qassim spent several hours under close observation in the intensive care unit on Friday following the medical operation.
This is the second time that the 80-year-old cleric has undergone surgery in just under two months. Last December he received desperately needed treatment.
Sheikh Qassim was arbitrarily stripped of his nationality in June 2016 and confined to his hometown in Diraz.
Bahraini regime's forces stormed his residence last May and placed him under house arrest. Throughout his ordeal, he has been deprived of adequate medical care leading to numerous health complications.
