Kenya Post-Election Protests: Police Killed 12, Used Excessive Force

Kenya's election was marred by human rights violations and house-to-house operations in western Kenya, HRW said.

The Watch said the August 8 general election included unlawful killings and beatings by police during protests.

"The brutal crackdown on protesters and residents, part of a pattern of violence and repression in opposition strongholds, undermined the elections," Africa researcher Otsieno Namwaya said.

Namwaya said police carried out house-to-house operations in Western Kenya on August 11 and 12.

"Residents said that police asked for any men in the house and beat or shot them," Namwaya added.

Residents of Obunga, Nyalenda, Nyamasaria, Arina, Kondele, and Manyatta neighborhoods in Kisumu told HRW that during house-to-house operations, officers broke down doors; beat residents; stole money, phones and television sets; and harassed women.

"Many town residents fled to a nearby school for the night, only to return to find their possessions looted, presumably by police," Namwaya said.
