The Status of the Armed Forces agreement between occupied Iraq and the US can be viewed as a last ditch Bush attempt to show something, anything at all for the millions of lives damaged in Iraq and America due to his administration's errors.
We have learnt through bitter experience that nothing good, ever comes from sucking up to the West.

At the turn of the 20th century, an Iranian machine gunner became King, having placed his finger print (due to his illiteracy) on documentation that he could not even read himself. He gave away 97% of Iran's oil and gas as well as 100% of rights on trade of major commodities to Britain; in effect he gave away five generation's futures so he could ride around in a Rolls-Royce motor car in a country that had no asphalt roads at the time. That was the costliest shortcut ever assumed by an Iranian to monarchy, albeit for a brief period before being deposed by the very masters who placed a crown upon his head.

In Iraq in 1979, another ever so slightly better educated military strongman called Saddam Hussein, from an impoverished background also made a deal with the devil, whose consequences are being suffered today by the Iraqi nation. Oh sure, Saddam constructed roads, motorways, tunnels and dams with foreign firms running amok and making billions out of his nation's pockets, but then he decided to break his agreement with Satan.

The point we are making here is that for as long as there are illiterate megalomaniacs in the Middle East who give themselves the right to give away their nations' rights and wealth to Western or Eastern powers, carnage and hardship will be an inevitable direct consequence.

The proposed agreement for the US to maintain large numbers of troops in Iraq past 2008 is another such scenario!

However, Iraq's current premier and politicians are well educated and aware that the unforeseen consequences of making such a huge concession to an illegal occupying power will maintain the region in a state of insecurity, anxiety and lawlessness.

This is not the first time that some cowboys have attempted bluff poker and have come away with the riches of the Middle East. Poker is a complex game of bluff and counter bluff invented in Iran -in fact it was all the rage during the Safavid Dynasty.
