The al-Quds [Jerusalem] municipality said Wednesday it plans to approve 800 new units in areas of east al-Quds in the coming month, a move that could complicate US President Donald Trump's attempt to restart the so-called peace talks.

The settler units in regions of al-Quds would be the first approved since Trump called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to curb settlement construction in February.

Following Wednesday's announcement, the White House issued a statement saying, "President Trump has publicly and privately expressed his concerns regarding settlements, and the administration has made clear that unrestrained settlement activity does not advance the prospect for ‘peace'."

The al-Quds municipality said it will approve the 800 units in an upcoming planning committee meeting, along with 114 units in Arab neighborhoods.

The city's mayor, Nir Barkat, also released a statement stressing that the construction in al-Quds is "essential, important and will continue full force."

In the meantime, Senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said the entity's move constituted "deliberate sabotage" of Trump's efforts to restart the so-called peace talks.

The construction of settlements constitutes a blatant violation of international law. The Geneva Conventions ban construction on occupied land. About 600,000 "Israeli" settlers live in over 230 illegal settlements built since the 1967 "Israeli" occupation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East al-Quds.

The last round of the "Israeli"-Palestinian talks collapsed in 2014. Among the major sticking points in those negotiations was the entity's continued settlement expansion on Palestinian territories.
