Rajab's relatives said Wednesday that he was taken to a military hospital for the surgery and that they were denied access to see him.

They further informed that he has been held in solitary confinement for 10 months.
Bahrain's government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Rajab was arrested in June over a series of messages posted to his Twitter account about the ongoing Saudi-led war in Yemen, as well as allegations of torture by authorities at a local prison.

He also faces charges for an article he wrote for The New York Times while he was imprisoned.

Rajab's trial comes amid a crackdown on dissent in Bahrain.

Thousands of anti-regime protesters have held demonstrations in Bahrain on an almost daily basis ever since a popular uprising began in the country in mid-February 2011. They are demanding that the Al Khalifah dynasty relinquish power and let a just system representing all Bahrainis be established.

Manama has gone to great lengths to clamp down on any sign of dissent. On March 14, 2011, troops from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were deployed to assist Bahrain in its brutal crackdown.

Scores of people have lost their lives and many others gotten arrested in the crackdown.
