Report Says 6K+ Fighters from Lebanon Joined Militant Groups

Al-Akhbar newspaper reported in its published issue on Friday that hundreds of the fighters were in their thirties.

A number of the fighters were killed and others were still engaged in battles alongside militant groups such as Daesh [ISIS] and Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, formerly called the Nusra Front.

The report said that the alleged fighters departed Lebanon through Beirut's Rafik Hariri International Airport, heading to Turkey and then the northern city of Raqqa, the de facto capital of Daesh.

Others used illegal border crossings and the sea.

It said that the numbers of fighters from Lebanon joining militant groups significantly increased since 2011, when the conflict erupted in the neighboring country Syria.

The daily cited a security report that said the number of fighters reached 6,000 in the last five years.
