Aleppo Battle: Army Liberates 80% of Militant-Occupied Territories in East

The Syrian army achieved significant success in its offensive in the Masaken Hanano district, an important stronghold of insurgents in eastern Aleppo, liberating more than 80 percent of the region, local media reported Friday.

"Following fierce clashes which continued even during the night, the army retook more than 80 percent of the territory of Masaken Hanano," a source told Al Watan newspaper.

The source continued, "An offensive in several other regions of the city was undertaken simultaneously, leading to militants, unable to create new defense lines, fleeing."

According to media reports, on Monday, Syrian troops supported by local forces managed to break through the key terrorist positions in the Masaken Hanano district, which lead to the eastern districts of Aleppo.

Over the recent months, Aleppo has been a major battleground in Syria, engaging army forces, Takfiris, and numerous US-backed "moderate" opposition groups.

Eastern Aleppo is currently encircled by the Syrian army, and the fighting has affected thousands of civilians still trapped in the city.

Internationally mediated ceasefires had collapsed as militants continued attacks and opposition failed to expel terrorists from the city.

The Syrian war broke out in 2011, with armed opposition and terrorist groups such as the Daesh [Arabic acronym for "ISIS" / "ISIL"] and Jabhat Fatah al Sham, formerly known as the Nusra Front attacking the Syrian army.
