Assad Envoy Meets with Lebanese President

An envoy to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad affirmed the "deep" bilateral ties between Damascus and Beirut after meeting with Lebanese President Michel Aoun Monday.

The Syrian Minister of Presidential Affairs Mansour Fadellulah Azam told reporters after the meeting at Baabda Palace that he had met with President Aoun to congratulate him for his election on behalf of President Assad.

He said he hoped that the new presidential term would fortify stability and security in Lebanon, "which in turn [would] reflect on the stability and security in Syria and the region."

He also said President Aoun stressed the importance of "the brotherly ties with Assad and the people of the two countries," during the meeting.

Azzam added that Lebanon and Syria had shared interests as they were both confronting "two common enemies: ‘Israel' and terrorism."

The envoy was accompanied by Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul-Karim Ali.
