A source at the province told SANA that a terrorist suicide bomber carried out the attack using a car bomb in al-Gharbiya neighborhood on the road between al-Hialiyeh roundabout and Youth City roundabout on the western part of the city.

The Daesh [Arabic acronym for "ISIS" / "ISIL"] Takfiri claimed the responsibility for the attack, local media report.

The source said that scores of people were martyred and injured in the attack, and that a number of residential buildings and the infrastructure in the area sustained severe damage.

Medical sources in the city said that al-Qamishli National Hospital and a number of private hospitals received the bodies of 44 martyrs as well as 140 injured people, some of whom sustained severe injuries, which means that the death toll is likely to rise.

According to the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the explosion targeted a center of the local Kurdish police and a nearby government building.

The explosion came as Kurdish forces pressed ahead with their offensive on the Daesh-held town of Manbij also in northern Syria.

The Syria Democratic Forces, a coalition of Kurdish and Arab fighters, had been the main force fighting Daesh in northern Syria, capturing significant territory from the Takfiri terrorists over the past two years.
