Although the Saudi Kingdom announced Thursday it stands ready to deploy ground troops to Syria to fight "ISIS," the Director of Gulf Affair Institute Ali al-Ahmad considered its offering aims only at giving the world the impression that Riyadh wants to combat the group, despite its continual support for it.

"The Saudis want to appear that they are against terrorism and against "ISIS"," al-Ahmed said Friday, adding that ""ISIS" is a Saudi proxy, just like the 1980s when they supported the so-called "mujahedeen" in Afghanistan."

Saudi Arabia is simply trying to appease the United States and its allies, and has no intention of sending troops into Syria, according to al-Ahmad.

For his part, Chief of Foreign Relations Department at the Syrian Ministry of Higher Education, Akil Mahfoud, explained that Riyadh will in fact assist terrorist groups in the war-torn Arab country.

The oil kingdom "will provide extensive support to al-Nusra, Ahrar ash-Sham and the like under the guise of fighting "ISIS"," he said.

"Any intervention in Syria will undoubtedly be carried out to change the course of the war in the country. It will hinder the success of the Syrian Arab Army. And those, who will come, will not be against "ISIS" regardless of what Turkey and Saudi Arabia claim."

Mahfoud further maintained that Riyadh has contemplated sending its army to Syria because the Syrian Army forces, assisted by Russian aircraft and Hizbullah fighters, have lately been on an offensive, while terrorist groups are losing.

Ironically, the Saudis have mounted a military campaign against Yemen, an operation that was condemned as humanitarian disaster.
