However, unconfirmed reports on social media claimed that as many as 50 died in the explosion and many more sustained injuries.

For its part, the Libyan state news agency LANA reported that the figure of 15 dead was expected to rise, quoting mediAcal sources in the town.

The suicide attack on the police station happened as 400 recruits were on exercise. Although "ISIS" terrorist group has not yet claimed responsibility, the attack is already being attributed to it.

Meanwhile, Libya's health ministry in the west of the country, under the control of the Tripoli government, announced a state of emergency in the wake of the attack.

In parallel, the regions' hospitals are already reportedly overwhelmed with the number of casualties, and hospitals in the surrounding area are on standby to start receiving the injured.

Relatively, UN envoy to Libya Martin Kobler condemned the attacks, calling on Libyans to unite against terrorism. He posted on his Twitter account: "I condemn in the strongest terms today's deadly suicide attack in Zliten, call on all Libyans to urgently unite in fight against terrorism."
