The kidnapping took place on Saturday, with Afghan officials saying that the victims had been taken away from the bus they were travelling in at gunpoint.

Eventually, the abduction sent shockwaves throughout the whole Hazara community.

However, officials have launched a massive operation to locate and release the hostages.

Deputy provincial police chief, said on Saturday it is not yet known if the abductees are men or women. He said they were forced off buses by unidentified gunmen before dawn Saturday on the Kabul-Kandahar highway.

Last month in the country, seven Hazaras were found dead in Zabul after being taken hostages by "ISIS" in neighboring Ghazni province up to six months earlier.

The seven victims, including three women, were also kidnapped while traveling between Zabul and Ghazni provinces.
