An explosion stroke Imam Sadek [AS] Mosque in the Kuwaiti capital, during Friday prayers, leaving scores of martyrs and injured.

According to Kuwaiti sources, the number of martyrs rose to 15 and several others were also injured, according to preliminary reports.

Medics said the suicide bombing killed "at least 13 people, while 25 others were hospitalized."

However, the exact number of casualties was expected to rise, as several casualties are in critical condition, local media outlets stated.

The Takfiri "ISIL" terrorist group had claimed responsibility for the attack.

Furthermore, the "ISIL"-affiliated group in Saudi Arabia, calling itself Najd Province, said militant Abu Suleiman al-Muwahhid carried out the attack on the mosque.

Al-Sadek Mosque which is located in al-Sawabir district in the city's east is one of the largest mosques in the capital.

Friday midday prayers are typically the most crowded of the week, and attendance increases during the holy Muslim month of Ramadan, which started last week.

Emergency services attended the scene, which was surrounded by clouds of black smoke and crowds of people milling about.

Meanwhile, Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah personally inspected the terrorist bombing site.

Kuwaiti sources said the Kuwaiti Council of Ministers held an emergency meeting to discuss the repercussions of the attack.
