Defense Ministry: Afghan Forces Kill 46 Taliban Militants

In its statement on Wednesday, the military declared that "a total of 46 terrorists were killed, 36 others wounded and two terrorists were captured during military operations over the past 24 hours."

The operations were carried out in Kunar, Parwan, Kapisa, Khost, Ghazni, Paktika, Kandahar, Urozgan, Badakhshan, Sar-e pol, Balkh, Kunduz, Helmand and Faryab provinces, the statement said.

However, the Defense Ministry also confirmed that eight military soldiers had lost their lives in roadside blasts over the same period.

Afghan army forces also confiscated weapons and defused several improvised explosive devices [IEDs] in the operation, according to the statement.

Though, the Taliban militant group had yet to make comments.

Further, Afghan security forces had assumed the full security charges from the US-led Western military alliance, NATO, and carried out a number of operations against Taliban militants since January 1.

US-led NATO troops invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington's so-called war on terror.

Currently some 13,500 foreign forces had been stationed in Afghanistan; senior US officials said the forces would focus mainly on training Afghan security forces across the militancy-riddled country.
