Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem affirmed that Syria supports any international effort to combat terrorism as long as it fully preserves civilians' lives and national sovereignty and is carried out according to international accords, at the UN on Monday.

Al-Moallem to UN: Syria Supports Counterterrorism Efforts within Sovereignty Standards Al-Moallem told the United Nations General Assembly: "The Syrian Arab Republic reiterates that it stands with any international effort aimed at fighting and combating terrorism, and stresses that this must be done in full respect of the lives of innocent civilians and within the frame of full respect of national sovereignty, and in conformity with international conventions."

He warned however that taking military action while some countries continue to support the militants could create a situation from which "the international community will not exit in decades."

"Let us together stop this ideology and its exporters, let us simultaneously exert pressure on the countries that joined the coalition led by the United States to stop their support of armed terrorist groups," al-Moallem said. "Only then combating terrorism militarily becomes viable."

Speaking on Sunday during a CBS "60 Minutes" interview, Obama acknowledged that US intelligence underestimated the rise of Daesh. He noted that his director of national intelligence, James Clapper, has acknowledged that the US "underestimated what had been taking place in Syria."

The Daesh militants control large swaths of territory in Syria and Iraq after rapid advances in the summer [2014]. Daesh sent its militants into Iraq in June, quickly seizing large swaths of land straddling the border between Syria and Iraq.

While the United States launched air strikes on Daesh targets in Iraq in August and has since widened them to Syria recently last week, some countries have since criticized the air strikes on both countries.
