Boko Haram insurgents have overrun much of the northeastern Nigerian town of Bama after hours of fighting that has killed scores and displaced thousands of residents, several security sources said on Tuesday.

The insurgents launched an attack on the town of Bama, 70 km [45 miles] from the Borno state capital of Maiduguri on Monday. They were initially repelled but came back in greater numbers overnight, the sources and witnesses said.

The sources added that there were heavy casualties on both sides. One security source said as many as 5,000 people fled.

Nigeria's defense spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

A large number of people have been internally displaced in Nigeria and many others have crossed the borders into neighboring countries because of the attacks conducted by Boko Haram militants.
On Saturday, the militants continued their acts of terror in Nigeria's twin towns of Gamboru and Ngala, killing scores of civilians.

Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for many deadly gun and bomb attacks in various parts of Nigeria since the beginning of its militancy in 2009. Over 10,000 people have so far been killed in the assaults.
