An American fighting for the so-called "Islamic State" [IS] was killed over the weekend in Syria, U.S. officials said on Tuesday, underlining growing concerns about Westerners signing up for extremist groups in the Middle East.

The United States had been aware that Douglas McCain, from San Diego, was in Syria, the White House said.

McCain was killed in fighting against the so-called "al-Nusra Front," an al-Qaida-linked group, U.S. media reports said.

Moreover, NBC said McCain was carrying about $800 in cash and his American passport when he was killed.

A senior Obama administration official told NBC that, "The threat we are most concerned about to the homeland is that of fighters like this returning to the U.S. and committing acts of "terrorism.""

U.S. officials last week said that more than 100 American nationals had left to fight in Syria or tried to do so, while hundreds of Britons have also reportedly made the journey, along with those from other European countries.
Additionally, the U.S. State Department estimates there are about 12,000 foreign fighters from at least 50 countries in Syria.
