A Kuwaiti, Hajjaj bin Fahd al-Ajmi, considered a financier of the so-called "al-Nusra Front," a militant group in Syria linked to the al-Qaida terrorist group, was arrested on Wednesday on his return from a visit to Qatar, activists said.
Ajmi was arrested at Kuwait airport,
the activists said on Twitter.
Recently last Friday, the U.N. Security Council placed Ajmi and five others on an al-Qaida sanctions list, imposing a travel ban and assets freeze.
Ajmi and the five others are accused of providing money, fighters and weapons to extremist groups.
In early August, the United States also imposed sanctions on Ajmi and two other Kuwaitis for allegedly raising money for "al-Nusra Front."
In Syria, more than 170,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the violence fueled by Arab and Western-backed militants in the country.
