Maher al-Hajjar, who has registered as the first presidential candidate in the Syrian election, was born in Aleppo in 1968. He obtained a diploma in Linguistic Studies from Aleppo University before he joined the Syrian Communist Party in 1984. Then, he seceded from the party in 2000.

In an interview with Al-Ahed news website, the Syrian presidential candidate Maher al-Hajjar stated his election platform and his ambitions if he is to assume presidency.

International, Arab Expectations

al-Hajjar stressed on strengthening the relations with countries that respect the international law and maintaining international peace and security.
He further called for recreating the project of the [Arab National Liberation Organization] since the main problem of Arab countries in general is the unserious drafting of this organization.

" The [Arab National Liberation Organization] hasn't followed up with the major Arab issues, including the Central Arab issue [Palestine] and the liberation of the occupied Arab countries," he added.
He notified that the organization has not worked on uniting Arab countries and on developing social issues; for this reason, Arab masses have abandoned political movements and parties.

Al-Hajjar lauded the Lebanese Resistance for its achievements, stressing that its responsibility should be held among all parties. He further praised the role of the Syrian army and the necessity to support it.

Social, Economic Field

Hajjar assured that the Syrian people have achieved a lot on the economic and social levels. However, following the Liberal policies which do not serve national interests extreme poverty has surfaced.

Highlighting his election platform, al-Hajjar considered that Syria should play a major regional role in the economic and social fields.
Presidentially, al-Hajjar addressed Arab and western countries who participated in aggravating the Syrian crises. "It is normal for those who send and arm terrorists in Syria to describe this presidential election as illicit. They want a president who accepts a shameful agreement with ‘Israel,'" he said.

In case he is to assume presidency, al-Hajjar stressed on separating peoples from their governments that don't express their wills such as Gulf governments, adding that relations will be based on Syria's interests.

Al-Hajjar hopes to win the presidential elections in order to spread security across Syria, to solve the crises based on political standards and to combat terrorism. He also notified that holding this elections will reflect the democracy in Syria.
