President of Iraqi Kurdistan Hints to Defending Kurds in Syria Militarily

Masoud Barzani, the president of the Iraqi Kurdistan region, has said that he will use "all capabilities" to defend Kurdish civilians under threat by al-Qaeda fighters in the Syrian war.
In a letter which he posted online Saturday on the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) website, he stated that he sent Kurdish representatives to investigate reports that "terrorists of al-Qaeda are attacking the civilian population and slaughtering innocent Kurdish women and children" in Syria.
Barzani further hinted that the Iraqi Kurdistan region would intervene militarily to defend Syrian Kurds.
Kurds represent 10% of the Syrian population and live in the northwest areas of the country.
During the past few weeks, heavy clashes took place between al-Nusra Front fighters and Kurds in vast areas of north Syria, in which Kurds, who announced "public alertness", were able to chase away al-Nusra fighters from a number of areas, chiefly Ras al-Ain.
