Brazilian riot police clashed with protesters in the city of Sao Paulo by firing tear gas, stun grenades and rubber bullets in an effort to disperse demonstrators on Tuesday.

The Tuesday clashes followed a protest rally against Sao Paulo State Governor Geraldo Alckmin, who is accused of corruption, demanding the demilitarization of the state police.

Police said a number of protesters armed with hammers robbed banks, shops and an automobile dealership in central Sao Paulo.

A police spokesman further reported the arrest of 20 protesters during the violent confrontation, which he said followed a peaceful demonstration against the governor.

Meanwhile, vari
ous police units were deployed on Sao Paulo's key financial district, where hundreds of protesters trashed about 10 banks and set a TV news van afire last Friday.

The unrest began in Sao Paulo with young protesters demanding a rollback of public transportation fare hikes, a demand that reverberated in several other major cities. The fare hikes were eventually called off.
