BEIRUT: Senior Muslim-Shiite cleric Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah and Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said on Thursday that an investigation into Sunday's protests should take its course through a "transparent and accurate" inquiry, as promised by Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) commander General Michel Suleiman.
In a telephone conversation, Fadlallah and Nasrallah discussed the latest developments in the country, particularly the events of last Sunday when a protest against electricity in the southern suburbs of Beirut rationing turned violent. At least nine protesters were killed and about two dozen wounded when someone - investigators are trying to determine who - opned fore on the crowd.
Talks also revolved around Israel's recognition of its failure in the summer 2006 war, as stated in the final report of the state-appointed Winograd commission, as well as the "responsibilities that should be shouldered by people inside and outside Lebanon in terms of unifying stands in confronting the enemy ['Israel']."
For his part, Suleiman called Fadlallah on Thursday for talks on the ongoing investigation into Sunday's protests.
While Fadlallah stressed the need to conduct the inquiry "as soon as possible," Suleiman promised to reach a "decisive and accurate" result.
Meanwhile, the vice president of the Higher Shiite Council, Sheikh Abdel-Amir Qabalan, urged the Lebanese Thursday to stay away from discord and work in favor of their country's interests.
"The salvation of Lebanon can only be reached by the unity and cooperation of its people," Qabalan told a visiting delegation from Christian groups.
According to Qabalan, the solution to the current crisis will be attained when the Lebanese keep clear of divisions and differences, which he said, "set them apart."
The sheikh urged politicians to comport themselves with "discretion and the right vision," adding: "Political activities require honesty in stands and speeches."
Qabalan also met Thursday with Amal Movement MP Ali Hassan Khalil to discuss the current situation in the local and regional arenas. No comments were released after the meeting.
